Mulu National Park, Sarawak

Last November was my first ever trip to Mulu National Park in Sarawak. Despite working more than ten years of my career in the tourism industry, this was the first time I finally had the opportunity to visit one of Sarawak's most iconic and breathtaking attractions.

After years of promoting this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I arrived only to have the visit feel like the ultimate teaser trailer.  I was only able to walk around the main entrance area and didn't get to visit any of the caves.

That was because my main purpose for traveling there was to attend an event held at Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa. While the resort and the surrounding jungle atmosphere were incredible, the deep, dark secrets of the caves will, unfortunately, have to wait for another time.

However, even a quick trip to Mulu’s entrance area offers its own rewards. I manage to pick up a few precious souvenirs, making sure to support local artisans. I came away with a beautiful woven bakul (a traditional basket) and a lovely necklace. It’s a great way to remember the trip and ensure that the local community benefits from the tourism surrounding the park.

Mulu, you've offered me a magnificent tease. The caves might have to wait, next trip, maybe.

Permaisuri Imperial New Wing Hotel, Miri

In March 2023, I had a pleasant 2D1N stay at the Permaisuri Imperial New Wing Hotel in Miri. The room was clean, and the bathroom was spacious and equipped with a bathtub, breakfast was good too.

My room on the 6th floor.

The lobby area, please note that the lobby is not on the ground floor, you would have to take the lift to get to the lobby.

View from the lobby. Facing the Wireless walk.

Breakfast at the hotel. Nasi lemak pandan with lamb curry was good.

8 Things to do in Miri, Sarawak

If you're visiting Miri in Sarawak, here are some must-do activities:

1. Start your day with breakfast at 2020 Cafe.

2. Head to Lun Bawang Cafe at The Summit for a delicious lunch.

3. Treat yourself to a seafood dinner.

4. Enjoy an ice kacang break in the afternoon at Old Man Street.

5. Check out Miri Handicraft Centre and Jalan High Street for some local handicraft shopping.  I find that Jalan High Street offers more affordable options.

6. Stock up on local products at Tamu Muhibbah, including belacan, cincaluk, Bario rice and salt, udang sesar, and dried shrimp.

7. Sip on fresh juice for supper at Wireless Walk.

8. If you have extra time, go for a relaxing massage at a spa. Plenty of spa and massage centre in the town area.

Ming Cafe, Miri

Located right across the street from Mega Hotel, Ming Cafe opens daily, serving variaty of food from local to western cuisine, make it a not to missed cafe if you are in the area.

The only things that I dislike about this place is the smell of the parit; being an old part of the city, I’m sure the parit system needs some upgrading works.

Ok, let’s not talk too much about the parit, here’s what we had during our 4 days work visit in Miri.

Teh Tarik

Teh O Peng

Cordon Bleu

BBQ Pork Penyet.

BBQ Pork rice with Manicai egg.
Terjumpa rambut la pulak dalam manicai tu!

Soup tulang - RM8

On Sunday evening, while having dinner we had, there was a procession going on along the road.  Here's the short clip that I took.

Dynasty Hotel, Miri

My room on the 8th floor of the hotel.
Good size room with great view, but I forgot to capture the view.. sigh..

And I had a yummylicious Kolok Mee Special (RM5.00) at the nearby kopitiam, behind Methodist Church, just a few steps away from the hotel.
Overall, I am happy with my 1st stay there.

Boy Thai Band

This band played at the recent Asia Music Festival.

They played the modernized Thai Music, a bit Jazzy mixer.

Great, sexy Jazz music.
Take a closer look at the thai xylophone player, he's kinda good-looking right?! Or maybe cute is more like it, familiar face like the Thai or Philipines hero in TV drama (my mum's favourite.. Haha)

The crowd loved them too.

Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, Miri

A room in the Longhouse at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, Miri.

Nice clean room with 4 single beds.

The only drawback it that it's quite far from the hotel lobby, so you have to call for a buggy pick-up every time you want to go out.
